Part of a nationwide Chartered Accountancy partnership - AIMS. Undertaking accounting, VAT and general business advice.

Separate Interim Management and consulting activities.


1990 - 2002 MOTOROLA

Fortune 100 telecommunications company, turnover £20 billion, 130,000 employees

1998 – to date European (EMEA) Financial Shared Services Director

Responsible for forming and leading financial shared services across EMEA, developing a European wide financial reporting system and installing a standard financial system for all businesses and countries. Included accounting, financial reporting and IT activities. Team of 100.

Achievements

  • Took direct management of all accounting and processing staff in EMEA. Centralised and improved quality by standardisation and mechanisation while reducing number of accounting centres (5) and costs by 30%. Loader Drew, outside payment consultants, ranked my Group as "significantly better than the norm".
  • Merged staff from various businesses into a central team, introduced web based reporting and rationalised process. All accounts reported simultaneously for every country in Europe to Head Office. Eliminated all weekend work from the one-day close cycle.
  • Rolled out all Oracle modules to all countries in 18 months. Implemented standard practices in each country while centralising complex tasks at an EMEA level. Ernst Young, our consultants, set a start date, which we improved by six months. They regarded our implementation as "outstanding".
  • Formed a centralised IT support team for all businesses. Hired own staff to replace consultants to lead all systems works in EMEA. We now undertake all our own developments at a fraction of the cost.

1993 – 1998 Business Group EMEA Financial Director

Responsible for leading the entire Finance, Computing and Facilities functions of a £500m. business, designing, manufacturing, engineering and selling complex radio infrastructure to Government and major private sector companies.

Achievements

  • Changed profile of finance to match new industry requirements. Reduced finance cost by 25% and increased profitability by 50%.
  • Acquired several businesses and sold others throughout EMEA. Appointed as Managing Director of one German acquisition based in Berlin.
  • Major business contributor in sales in Emerging Markets, with significant impact in political influencing in Emerging Markets in former East Europe and Mid East.
  • Major enhancements to information systems to improve data and reduce clerical effort. Introduced Data-warehouse tools to allow operating managers to extract data for themselves.

1990 – 1993 European Treasurer

Responsible for the foreign exchange management, cash funding, management and reporting for all business sectors within Motorola's sixteen subsidiaries in Europe, (turnover of £4billion (bn)).

Achievements

  • Established Trade Finance leadership for sales and investments in East EMEA.
  • Increased scale of world-wide Multi-currency netting system. Volume £3bn per year, FX trades $150m each week. Citibank rank system as "the biggest in the world". Major contributor to cost reductions.
  • Implemented local function currency accounting reporting and management. Required major changes of business process and dealing with the IRS in USA. Implemented a world-wide FX system with Swiss Bank.

1988 – 1990 GENERAL ELECTRIC PLC

1989 –1990 Treasurer and Tax Manager, GEC Alsthom Ltd.

Responsible to the Finance Director for the total Treasury activity in the UK, formed by merging the heavy electrical activity of GEC and CGE of France. UK managed business was in excess of £16bn. sales and £500m. assets.

1988 – 1989 Assistant Group Treasurer, GEC plc

Responsible to the Group Treasurer of GEC plc for the total treasury management of Head Office Treasury. Major activity was the financing of the GEC bid for Plessey plc.


 
1982 – 1988 UNISYS

A US-owned public computer company.

Director of Finance and Administration, EMEA Product Distribution. Responsible for all financial aspects of the procurement and delivery of £1bn of computer equipment to every subsidiary in Europe and distributors in the Middle East.

Director of Corporate Affairs, Unisys UK. Continued all the functions of the Treasurer of Burroughs Machines Ltd., within Unisys Ltd., the company formed on the purchase of Sperry Ltd. Managed a £500m Euro-Commercial paper programme to fund part of the global acquisition.

Burroughs Machines Limited – Treasurer. Responsible for all the Treasury and Tax affairs.

 

1979 – 1982 THOMAS COOK GROUP

Initial position was a member of the corporate finance department, working on finance projects. Promoted to treasury with responsibility for all foreign exchange matters.

1977 – 1979 PRICE WATERHOUSE

Manager in the Corporation Tax Department. Work involved auditing and preparing company tax and deferred tax provisions, submitting computations to, and negotiating with, the Inland Revenue. Great experience was gained in the art of analysing complex problems and interpreting legislation. More important was the interpretation of these problems into understandable form for clients.

1973 – 1977 PANNELL FITZPATRICK

Worked as an articled clerk on a wide range of auditing and accountancy assignments, whilst passing all exams at the first attempt. This training developed the ability to work quickly and accurately.
